Description

Nearly fifty percent of homeless youth in Kansas City are LGBTQ. We’re on a mission to change that.

We are a LGBTQ-specific transitional and rapid re-housing program. We seek to address the core problems causing LGBTQ homelessness by providing a community first and housing plus approach.

Transitional Housing Transitional housing is a short term housing program that is designed to best support specific segments of the homeless population, including working homeless people who are earning too little money to afford long-term housing.

Rapid Re-Housing Rapid Re-housing is designed to serve those who could reasonably be approved for a lease, but are financially unable to afford the cost of living. Our program assist with those expenses.

Lion House is the first program dedicated to serving specifically the LGBTQ community and as such we approach the problem from a different angle. The wrap around services provided by Our Spot KC and Lion House Program staff help equip LGBTQ people and their families with the tools and the knowledge necessary to reach their goals of stable and sustainable housing.

Our program led by members of the community it serves and as such we have a unique understanding of identities, challenges and the culture of being an LGBTQ person in the Kansas City area. We understand that family is more than just blood and legal paperwork, we understand that your ID might have the wrong name on it, we understand what it means to have to come out, not just once, but over and over again.

Lion House has two youth houses, as well as rapid rehousing to help folks cover rent in their own apartments. They provide wraparound services to all of the individuals in their programs, so that includes health care, mental health, life skills, getting them enrolled in colleges and trade schools, and mentorship. Construction will soon begin on an additional project under Lion House – a group of cottages that will serve as housing for queer and trans adults and families. Not too far down the road is the navigation center, where community programs will take place. Within the navigation center, there is also going to be an LGBTQ health clinic, therapists offices, coworking space for other nonprofits, and other services.
